The North American conference for the International Association of Public Participation was held in Victoria BC this year. The conference offered workshops and panels to discuss topics such as Indigenous engagement, transportation infrastructure, and engagement at the local and regional level of government.
Having the conference in Victoria BC was a great opportunity for the province and the island to showcase their beauty and charm and inspire attendees from across the continent. Thankfully, the September rains held off, and it was an absolutely gorgeous backdrop to the event!
CitySpaces’ Lani Brunn presented Thursday on, “Relevant Voices: Including Vulnerable Populations in Public Engagement”. The session covered practical methods, across the entire IAP2 Spectrum of Participation, to help attendees engage vulnerable populations and avoid pitfalls when it comes to unique groups.
Lani’s presentation provided examples of promising practices of creative engagement from across North America. There was a focus on those who have experienced homelessness, while also addressing mental health issues, tenants in low-income housing, addictions, vulnerable youth and people with disabilities.
One of the benefits of having a conference on the island is the opportunity to explore the area by bicycle. The Lockside Trail is a fantastic bike path that starts at Swartz Bay ferry terminal and leads right into downtown Victoria. There is no need for a car, with great infrastructure such as this! Not only that, but having the conference in September lets you take advantage of local farmers selling they pumpkins and squash by the roadside.
Congratulations to the conference steering committee, IAP2 Canada and IAP2 USA, staff and sponsors for putting on a conference that inspires making better decisions together. It was great to meet people from across North America who have a passion for engagement while networking, having thoughtful conversations, and taking advantage of opportunities for learning.
Our recommendation? Don’t miss out on this great event next year in Charlotte, North Carolina!
