Yukon Housing Needs Assessment Methodology

Location:
Across Yukon

Client:
Yukon Housing Corporation

Project Overview

The Yukon Housing Corporation engaged CitySpaces to develop a standardized housing needs assessment methodology for Yukon communities, including the creation of a comprehensive guide for conducting housing needs assessments across the territory, alongside a pilot assessment in the Village of Haines Junction. The project involved coordination with multiple Yukon Government departments, as well as with Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The comprehensive guide is currently in its final stages and will be aligned with both federal and territorial housing needs assessment templates.

Key Highlights

Throughout the project, CitySpaces conducted quantitative data analysis using the UBC HART method to evaluate data collection and analysis within the Yukon context. Before beginning qualitative research, our team completed a best practice review of housing needs assessment approaches used in other northern provinces and territories. Following these best practices, we carried out in-depth qualitative engagement in Haines Junction, including focus groups, sessions with seniors and Elders, youth drop-ins, community pop-ups, a visioning workshop, and an online survey.

The project culminated in a comprehensive Housing Needs Assessment for the Village of Haines Junction and a forthcoming guide to support all Yukon communities in conducting their own housing needs assessments.
