West Cambie is strategically located between Richmond’s City Centre and Highway 99, and is the region’s main north-south transportation route, only minutes from the Vancouver International Airport. In 2004, CitySpaces was engaged to update the existing area plan and prepare a detailed plan to facilitate redevelopment of a 150+ acre sub-area — Alexandra.
When fully developed, Alexandra will be a “complete and balanced” community with approximately 3,000 housing units of various types and densities, parks and green areas, and 3,000 jobs. Design guidelines cover five character areas. A unique aspect of the plan is a fully costed implementation strategy, which establishes how all community amenity, servicing and infrastructure elements will be financed.
Residential development in the Alexandra area began in 2009. As of mid-2013, three condominium projects had been built and occupied. The “Garden City Lands”, located immediately south of the Alexandra area is a 55-hectare open space owned by the City of Richmond. In mid-2013, CitySpaces worked with the City of Richmond to engage the public in envisioning the future of the “Garden City Lands”.
