Granville Island in Vancouver is designed to attract local residents and visitors to meet, explore and experience a variety of cultural, educational, commercial and industrial activities all year round. It is recognized as one of the most successful waterfront developments in North America.
As part of its revitalization efforts, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) (the Government organization that manages Granville Island), secured a number of retrofitted shipping containers for use as the Popina Canteen Project by local chefs along with an outdoor seating area. CMHC engaged CitySpaces in a project management role to help coordinate the Popina Canteen Project’s delivery. This involved our team undertaking the following key tasks and activities:
- Assembling the Popina Canteen Project team, comprising all design consultants and the architecture lead
- Coordination of the team, project scoping and supporting the project architect
- Facilitation of design workshops throughout the Popina Canteen Project
- Recommendations on the construction procurement strategy
- Project scheduling, budget estimations, and progress reporting
- Undertaking consultation with the City of Vancouver to fully understand the requirements for the permitting and approvals process
- Collating and submitting the building and development permit applications with the project architect
- Working with the Popina Canteen contract manager from construction tendering to project completion stage
The Popina Canteen at Granville Island opened to the public in July 2018.
