The Town of Osoyoos retained the professional design, planning and facilitation services of CitySpaces Consulting with Eckford Tyacke + Associates (ETA) Landscape Architecture to lead a multi-day charrette process with key members of the community.
The term charrette has evolved to now refer to bringing together key stakeholders for a short, collaborative, brainstorming session leading to design solutions for existing issues and opportunities. The purpose of this charrette (inclusive of a “Charrette Cafe”) was to develop a Waterfront Park Design Concept Plan for Gyro Park. Participants were encouraged to “Think Big”. The idea of the charrette and the resulting design is meant to provide a guide for development over the long term.
Through the process a series of issues and opportunities were identified in relation to access; activities; the bandshell; beach quality; lawn bowling; lighting; the Museum; parking; safety and security; the Seniors Centre; signage; and waterfront walkway & views.
From the discussion a series of guiding principles were developed and “emerging directions” were formed.
Guiding Principles
1. Become a heart in the community through year-round activities, events, programming, and the creation of a main celebration space.
2. Take advantage of the waterfront setting with appropriate uses, such as activities and events.
3. Provide flexible multi-purpose spaces.
4. Ensure the park is safe for all users.
5. Integrate sense of culture and heritage.
6. Protect and enhance water quality of the lake.

- Creation of a main celebration space and gathering space.
- Defined central green open space.
- Ability to stage events.
- Development of a perimeter Waterfront Walkway (over time).
