CitySpaces provided community planning services to the District of Oak Bay to prepare an Age-Friendly Action Plan. Funded by the Province and the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), the key goal of the Oak Bay Age-Friendly Action Plan was to create a roadmap to guide decisions and initiatives that will help Oak Bay meet the needs of its older residents, as well as enable the District to be recognized as an Age-Friendly community by Age-Friendly British Columbia.
Our work plan consisted of the following components:
- Undertake baseline research - including analyzing age-friendly indicators and demographic data, review existing policies and plans, and desktop research of community resources, services, and programs.
- Community consultation - including stakeholder workshops, public open houses and interactive meetings with the Age-Friendly Advisory Committee.
- Prepare the Age-Friendly Action Plan - structured around the themes of age-friendly communities and grounded in the local context, this report provides a clear set of recommended strategies and actions for future initiatives, policies and programs.
Recommendations from the final Oak Bay Age-Friendly Action Plan included age-friendly strategies and actions for outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, civic participation, community support and health services, communication and information, and social inclusion.
The final Oak Bay Age-Friendly Action Plan is a graphically rich and readable document accessible to a wide variety of audiences.
