Mission Affordable Housing Strategy
The City of Mission embarked on a new Affordable Housing Strategy that outlines a ten-year plan to address housing needs and provide more diverse housing options that address housing gaps identified in the City's Housing Needs Assessment. The Strategy is a roadmap to address the challenges local government staff, local partners, non-profit societies, and developers experience when creating new housing stock. Certain policy and regulatory directions will require further research and consultation; however a clear framework is provided to ensure staff can move toward implementation successfully.
CitySpaces reviewed the relevant data-sets, including the City's Housing Needs Assessment, to better understand housing needs and gaps in Mission. This information helped our team define priority areas of focus which were tabled with the Sustainable Housing Committee and Development Liaison Committee to obtain their feedback. Our team completed case study research to provide staff with a clear reference of how certain actions were implemented in other jurisdictions. Following this case study research, stakeholder engagement, and data analysis, recommended actions were identified and prioritized according to an implementation timeline. Further partnerships, education and capacity-building, and funding from senior government will be key to achieving success on this Affordable Housing Strategy.
