Held this past week, the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Power Centre Charrette involved municipal staff from current and long range planning, parks and recreation, economic development, community services, operations, engineering and administration.
A team of 5 planners, urban designers, and policy specialists from CitySpaces led and facilitated the 3.5-day charrette with staff to develop a Area Structure Plan including design concepts and land use policy.
The charrette resulted in two concepts for the development of the 72-acre site into a retail hub to service the buying needs of the Ft. McMurray and greater Wood Buffalo community. Simultaneously, policies for the Area Structure Plan were being developed to support the successful implementation of a pedestrian-friendly, environmentally responsible and economically viable retail “power centre”.
Integral to the charrette were opportunities for interested stakeholders and the public to view the ideas and policies as they were being developed. Additionally, there were opportunities to engage in a dialogue on ideas, and contribute meaningful and informative insights.
