The government of British Columbia has announced a contribution of $5 million for the first phase of a three phase project to expand the Covenant House Vancouver (CHV) that will commence this fall.
The funding will be added to the $10 million that Covenant House has raised for a new 21,800 sq ft building at 530 Drake Street. The new building will include offices, 14 crisis beds for homeless and vulnerable youth and a drop-in centre where youth can access health care. BC Housing has given Covenant House an interest-free loan for the site at 530 Drake Street which was formerly the site of the Immigrant Services Society of BC.
Upon completion of the new building, the existing location of CHV at 575 Drake Street is scheduled for redevelopment for the second phase of the project which comprises a ten storey, 54,000 sq ft building with education and training spaces, counseling rooms, fitness facilities and bedrooms for 75 young people.
Following completion of Phase 2, renovations at 326 Pender Street will occur to enhance CHV’s Rights of Passage transitional living program. This will involve reconverting shelter bedrooms back to apartments providing accommodation for an additional 20 young people.
CitySpaces Consulting Ltd. is acting as the project managers for this overall expansion.
