Project Overview

First United engaged CitySpaces to lead a community engagement process in support of its redevelopment project. The goal was to understand how the new building could best meet the needs of the community, particularly in relation to key spaces and gathering areas. CitySpaces facilitated a consultation process designed to explore what type of building would be most meaningful for those who use and rely on First United.

Engagement activities created opportunities for the community to learn about the project and share their thoughts on current building challenges and aspirations for the new space. The process sought input from both individuals who use First United’s services and from community partners within and beyond the Downtown Eastside.

Key Highlights

The engagement process included a range of activities such as pop-up events—designed to meet people where they are in easily accessible community spaces—as well as focus groups and a community survey. Through these efforts, several key themes emerged:

  • Programs that reflect the needs and priorities of the community;
  • Continued access to the food program;
  • Supportive and caring staff;
  • Permanent, affordable housing;
  • A security presence that feels both safe and welcoming;
  • Connection to nature;
  • Thoughtful space design and décor;
  • Space for spirituality and healing;
  • Opportunities for social connection; and
  • A quiet place for day rest.

Feedback from Downtown Eastside community members and partners was overwhelmingly positive. The engagement reaffirmed the vital role First United plays in the community and highlighted the importance of creating a welcoming, inclusive, and homelike environment, while being flexible enough to meet evolving needs over time.
