Timber Grove apartments, opened in March of 2012. CitySpaces acted as development consultants for the project. As an Olympic legacy project, the apartments now offer affordable rental apartments for people who are at risk of becoming homeless in the Surrey area. Modular units from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Village in Whistler were creatively recycled into a permanent structure; transformed with new siding, roof and on-site building components.

Timber Grove apartments is a three-storey building, providing 52 studio apartments; each self-contained apartment of approximately 355 square feet. In addition to the apartments, Timber Grove also includes a communal kitchen and dining area, laundry room, an office, and storage space. CitySpaces looked after the project development to construction documentation stage, rezoning and development permit approvals, and the construction coordination.

Coast Mental Health operates the facility as well as provides on-site services, including meal preparation, job skills training and 24/7 support.

The total capital cost of the project was approximately $13.2 million, with an annual operating budget of $488,000. The province contributed $10.5 million, with $2.3 million coming from the City of Surrey and $90,000 from Fraser Health.

Olympic Legacy Projects

Timber Grove apartments is the result of an agreement between the Province and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) to reconfigure temporary modular housing from the Whistler Athletes’ Village. The modular housing was relocated and converted into 156 permanent, affordable rental homes in six communities across B.C. including Enderby, Sechelt, Saanich and Chilliwack, and Chetwynd. The Timber Grove apartments in Surrey was the final project in this Olympic legacy partnership.
